Objective To investigate the characteristics of water consumption and its influencing factors among town adult residents, in order to bring forward suggestions on water consumption behaviors for township residents. Methods Residents living in 2 towns of Chongqing were recruited as the research subjects. Questionnaire and physical examination were adopted to obtain their personal water consumption and water-related physical, social and behavioral data. Student' s t test, One-Way ANOVA, Chi-square and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to analyze the association of the daily water consumption with its influencing factors. Results There were 5 493 subjects (2 067 males and 3 426 females) in this study, with an average age of 58.76 years. The total daily water consumption was 1.50 + 0.75 L for each person, with that of men significantly higher than that of women ( 1.61 +--0.81 vs 1.44 +0.70 L, P 〈0.05 ). Single factor results showed that those of overweight, being married, higher educational level, higher income, smoking, alcohol consumption, tea consumption, having meals not on time, higher labor intensity, more daily exercise, and better sleep quality had significantly higher water consumption ( P 〈 0.05 ). Multivariate logistic regression analysis found that gender, body mass index (BMI), annual income, alcohol consumption, tea consumption and daily exercise were related factors affecting the water consumption ( P 〈 0.05 ). Conclusion The daily water consumption is comparatively low in the adult residents living in the towns of Chongqing, and the daily water consumption does not meet the standards of 1.7 L for men and 1. 5 L for women recommended by Chinese nutrition society. The influencing factors associated with water consumption are relatively complex. We suggest that after guaranteeing the safety of drinking water, residents shall be encouraged to drink enough water actively.
