英文摘要：

To grasp an overall picture of local Chinese history and culture is a necessary and essential step to understand Chinese civilization as a whole. Area research conducted from the perspective of interaction among space, history and ethnic groups exhibits its importance when being embedded into the space and time of watershed to be studied. This paper summarizes four turning points. 1） from community--based to area--based approach; 2） from ethnic groups to wa- tershed focus; 3） from Southeastern--oriented to Southwestern oriented re- search; and 4） from anthropology vision to interdisciplinary communication and coordination.
