In this study, we have collected and analyzed surface sediments at the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) and its nearby coastal area in hope to find the pollution degree of bisphenol A (BPA) and four kinds of important chlorophenols (CPs), i.e. pentachlorophenol (PCP), 2-chlorophenol (2-CP), 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP). The results of our investigation and analysis show that some of CPs and BPA contaminants exist in all of the collected sediments, in which the detection rate of PCP, 2,4- DCP and BPA can reach 100%. It indicates that the PRE area has been contaminated by all the three contaminants. 2,4,6-TCP was also detected in some of the sediment samples with the detection rate of 30%. However, 2-CP has not been detected in all of the sample-collecting areas. In addition, the concentrations of the above mentioned organic pollutants have been quantitatively analyzed. As to the contaminants with the detection rates of 100%, the content ranges of PCP, 2, 4-DCP, and BPA stand 0.57-4.30 ng/g, 0.17 - 7.20 ng/g, and 0.58- 2.16 ng/g, respectively (for dry weight). As to 2,4,6-TCP, the content range in the sampling areas is only 0.25 - 2.18 ng/g. Though the contamination levels of the above areas are different for different sediments, the concentrations of all the detected pollutants in the sediments from the Estuary are higher than those in the sediments from fishpond and Pearl River mouth. In spite of the above detections, no significant relationship can be found between the contents of BPA or CPs with the main environmental factors such as pH and organic matter content. In accordance with the EC/PNEC evaluation system and the endowed sediment screening benchmarks (SSB) of the compounds in USEPA, the residue contents of BPA and CPs in the aquatic sediments of Pearl River estuary area wouldn' t seem to result in ecological hazards to the environment and human beings.
