The Trilinos project is analyzed, which is sponsored by such official programs as ASC and being carried out at the Sandia national laboratories in the USA. The ideas about the design and structural organization of Trilinos are discussed, and Epetra, the basic linear algebra package, is explained in particular. A linear algebra object model is established in the Trilinos framework, and acts as the foundation and bridge for communication of various numerical libraries, at preseut Epetra is the product implementation ofthis model. The design features of Epetra and its main class hierarchy are described in more detail. Finally some experiments are conducted and presented to evaluate its performance. The Trilinos project is a representative effort among many numerical projects currently in progress, from which it is obvious that they have been endeavoring to effectively facilitate the collaboration, integration and scalability of a variety of numerical software.
