The modern pollen and spore data and their related climate ranges are crucial for palaeoclimate reconstruction based on Quaternary pollen spectra. The present work concerns data collection and supplements of modern surface pollen samples in East Asia. So far, the modern pollen dataset is composed of 2858 sites mainly from China, Mongolia, Japan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, India, Russian Far East, and the East and the South China Seas. The location of the dataset covers an area from latitude 8°N to 55°N and from longitude 70°E to 140°E. There are 729 pollen types including 651 pollen taxa of Angiosperms and Gymnosperms, and 78 spores of Pteridophyte,Bryophyte and Algae. The most frequent pollen taxa in the dataset are those of generally over-representative plants, such as Artemisia , Pinus , Chenopodiaceae-Amaranthaceae, Poaceae, Castanopsis-Lithocarpus , Betula , Cyperaceae, Picea , Quercus,Alnus, Cyclobalanopsis, etc. The principal 48 pollen taxa in the database were plotted on isoline maps. Modern spatial distributions for the majority of taxa indicate distinct distribution patterns closely related to their vegetation zones and related bioclimatic areas. However, a few taxa has broader distribution such as Poaceae and Asteraceae which have low identification levels( family level). An exercise using modern analogue technique allowed testing the accuracy of the pollen-based climate reconstruction. Result shows that the reconstruction is reliable with the correlation coefficients between the observed and predicted climate values as high as 〉0. 9. This work presents the first result of spatial distribution for principal pollen taxa at continental scale in Eastern Asia, and testifies the ability for pollen-based climate calibration. The present dataset,as an open internet resource, may help to improve researches on quantitative paleoclimate reconstruction.
