Based on direct current measurements in the Monterey Bay from a subsurface mooring with an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler during the period of April 2011 to October 2011,tidal characteristics were analyzed using several methods.Current spectra indicate that the semidiurnal(M2 and S2) and diurnal(K1 and O1) were the dominant constituents.Tidal Current Harmonic Analysis results demonstrate that the tidal currents of the principal semidiurnal rotate clockwise with depth. The vertical structures of two principal semidiurnal constituents(M2 and S2) were similar, which suggested the tidal currents were mainly barotropic in this area. The main features of the variation of the four principal tidal constituents with depth demonstrated that the currents in this region are influenced by the lower boundary layer.Different vertical modes are calculated based on the Empirical Orthogonal Function(EOF) analysis of the Eastern and Northern components of the tidal currents, with a variance contribution for the zero-order mode of at least 85%.The variance contribution of the baroclinic model is minimal, which further reveals a strong barotropic character for the tidal currents of this region.
