QIU Cai devoted himself into the writing of Ci after the age of 50. Being friends of many com- posers of Ci, he avoided being confined to the current style. In the early period of his writing, he was under the instruction of many advisors and influenced by famous composers of both South and North Song Dynasty, especially by composers of North Song Dynasty, which gave his work a style of gentle, refreshing, elegant and leisure. In the later period, however, affected by the change of society and his own experience, the emotional connotation and aesthetic feature in this Ci changed into emptiness, cold and vigorous, which was closer to the style of the composers of South Song Dynasty. He was certainly an important composer of Ci in the period of the Republic of China.
