Organic anion transporters (OATs) play a critical role in the elimination of numerous endogenous and exogenous organic anions from the body. The renal OATs contribute to the excretion of many exogenous organic anions such as drugs, numerous environmental chemicals, biological toxin and endogenous organic anions including many kinds of uremic toxin, Recently, several studies have indicated that the expressions of OATs are affected in various kidney diseases and cause consequent pathophysiolgical effects. In this review, current knowledge and recent progress in the understanding of OATs' biological characteristics in renal proximal tubular and its' expression change and significance in disease states are discussed.
