Natural products （NPs） traditionally have played an important role in drug discovery and were the basis of most early medicines. The emergence of synthetic biology provides a new opportunity for the traditional natural products development. Natural products development and manufacturing based on the concept of synthetic biology will attract more and more attentions. This article reviews the application of synthetic biology in natural products development and manufacturing, including novel compounds discovery, biosynthetic elements screening, rational- design-based natural products biosynthesis, natural products biosynthesis and optimization in the heterologous artificial chassis cells.
