Neuron synchronization is an important characteristic of epilepsy. In this study, a novel technique of narrow band phase synchronization was applied to analyze EEG data of 54 epileptic patients and its control group with 10 subjects. A new statistic index, phase synchronization divergence of alpha frequency (PSDAF) measuring the difference of synchrony mode between epileptic and its control group, has been proposed. The data show that the average narrow band phase locking value of epilepsy group is significantly lower than that of control group (P=0.02058). Furthermore, it was found that the PSDAF of control group was significantly lower compared to that of epilepsy group (P=0.003060), which showed a stronger "mutual entrainment of an ensemble of non-linear alpha rhythm generators" in the neural system of subjects in the control group. The results suggest that there is close relationship between epileptic disease and such a phenomenon, which are the increase of PSDAF and the decrease of mutual entrainment of Alpha oscillations.
