Facing the new situations of city development,the paper identifies the problems of the practice of residential planning and analyzes discontinuities in current planning system.Combined with urban design,the paper proposes the method of embedding urban design system in residential planning.As a manageable measure that is more flexible and practical,urban design can specify or modify the regulatory indicators,establishing regulating rules on the municipal level to ensure public interests and environmental quality.
