Fine roots play important roles in the energy flow and material circulation of forest ecosystems. Fine roots constitute the most dynamic portion of tree root systems and absorb water and nutrients from the soil. Fine roots are flexible. The biomass, functional traits and morphological characteristics of fine roots vary with different environmental factors. The morphological and structural traits of fine roots can determine the absorptive ability of plants. This paper reviewed the adaptation of fine root biomass and fine root traits to environment and proposed future research directions of root ecology.
