Long noncoding RNAs are functional RNA molecules longer than 200 nucleotides which play vital roles in the development of various diseases, becoming the hot research field of noncoding RNA in recent years. Some studies have provided evidence that lnc RNAs can regulate phenotype switch of smooth muscle cells, proliferation and migration of endothelial cells and cholesterol metabolism of monocyte-macrophages, which indicate that lnc RNAs are the key regulatory molecules involved in development of atherosclerosis.
