Tetraophasis szechenyii, afirst-grade state protected peculiar species in China, distributes in a narrow zone. Their ecological habits, such as inhabiting environment, population number, pattern of activities, food, were investigated. The results showed that the birds lived mainly in coniferous forests feeding on plants and with the highest meeting rate. The south slope had higher population density than that of the north slope in Pangmuling. The birds usually crowded in a group of 3-5 during the day and inhabited in trees at night. Their number was comparatively large with 3-11 /km^2 in Yajiang area. It is probable that the good situation has much to do with the geogrophical environment, the weather and the powerful protection measures.
