Pillar [n]arenes are a new class of host molecules,which are cyclic oligomers consisting of hydroquinones or 1,4-disubstituted hydroquinone ethers linked by methylene bridges in the para positions of the benze rings.Herein,recent development on the synthesis of pillar [n]arenes and pillar [n]arene derivatives,and their host-guest chemistry,i.e.,molecular recognition and selective binding towards guest molecules,and their self-assembly properties was reviewed.In addition,prospects for future research based on pillar [n]arenes were also discussed.
