The evolution of an ice lens during soil freezing was studied theoretically using segregation potential theory and the hypothesis of an expanded quasi-static process. The intermittent freezing method of controlling frost heave was also examined. The applicability of the qua- si-static model and the qualitative characteristics of lens growth were analyzed. The results show that the model describes the slow growth of the final ice lens and how intermittent freezing controls frost heave by restraining the final lens' growth. The basic principle for controlling frost heave is to have a fast moving freezing front at the preliminary stages of freezing and to increase the time of intermittent phase to restrain ice lens development as the front stabilizes.
