Fast urbanization in China has caused a series of critical environmental problems, such as the mining pollution, sewage and garbage pollution, excessive consumption of resources and ecological destruction. It is a serious threat to the sustainable development in urban areas. This paper suggests that the main reasons are lack of awareness of environmental protection, imperfect laws and regulations, lagging infrastructure and inadequate supervision on environmental protection. In order to improve the urban environmental quality, the following countermeasures should be done, such as establishing and improving fundamental regulations, making out reasonable planning and management measures, strengthening supervision and administration, enlarging investment in pollution administration and technological innovation, improving the publicity and education of environmental protection.
