The basement membrane (BM) is a specialised form of extracellular matrix ( ECM), which is a major barrier to tumor cells during metastasis. The component of basement membrane plays important role in regulating tumor metastasis by interacting with cell surface receptor integrins. On the other hand, tumor cells secrete Matrix metalloproteinase and Heparanase to degrade the extracellular matrix compo- nents, as well as adjust the expression of surface receptor-integrins to facilitate migration in basement membrane and adhesion to target organs. Understanding of the celI-ECM interaction may offer us new strategy for drug discovery.
