The National Basic Research Program of China (973 program), entitled “Low-frequency variability of the Subtropical North Pacific Ocean Circulation and its impacts on the dynamic environment of Chinese coastal seas” conducted a deep ocean scientific expedition in later half of September, 2008 with RV “Dongfanghong 2” of Ocean University of China. In this expedition, subsurface mooring arrays were deployed at the origin of the Kuroshio Current and in the Luzon Strait, as well as one low ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) on the East China Sea shelf north of Taiwan. This project, for the first time, set up a multipoint synchronous longterm observational system to monitor the deep oceanmarginal sea dynamic system composed by the Subtropical North Pacific Ocean and Chinese Coastal Seas. The system will provide a critical support for understanding processes and mechanisms of mass and energy exchanges in this deep ocean-marginal sea dynamic system. The implementation of the observation system is an important exploration of deep ocean dynamic environment in-situ investigation, and will provide valuable experience for future long-term in-situ investigation of deep ocean dynamic environment by our country.
