Specific dynamic action (SDA) refers to the increase in metabolic rate in response to feeding which has significantly ecological relevance in the researches of animal physiological ecology, The pre-feeding and postprandial oxygen consumption rate ( Vo2 ) in juvenile crucian carp are fed with 0, 0.50%, 1.00%, 2.00% and 4.00% body mass meal size are measured at 25 ℃. The Vo2 increases immediately after feeding and it rises to peaked at 2 h posffeeding. The peak V% of 0.50%, 1.00%, 2.00% and 4.00% meal size groups are (96.15 ± 7.74), ( 100.72± 7.29 ), ( 117.72 ± 7.23 ) and ( 173.22 ± 14.20) mg·kg^-1·h^- 1, respectively. The peak Vo2 of fish fed with 4.00% meal size is significantly higher than those of others (p 〈 0.05 ). The SDA duration of fish fed with 0.50%, 1.00%, 2.00% and 4.00% meal size is (6.29 ±0.68), (7.14 ±0.85), (7.33± 1.23) and (9.20 ± 1.36) h, but there are no significant difference among all groups. The energy expended on SDA of fish fed with 0.50% , 1.00%, 2.00% and 4. 00% meal size are (1.42 ±0.18), (1.58 ±0.20), (2.63 ±0.60) and (5.33 ±0.76) kJ· kg^-1 , and the value of 4.00% meal size group is significantly higher than those of other groups (p 〈 0.05 ). SDA coefficients of 0.50% , 1.00%, 2.00% and 4.00% meal size groups are (4.60 ± 0.52 ) %, ( 2.54 ± 0.34 ) %, ( 2.07 ± 0.45 ) %, ( 2.17± 0.30) % , and the coefficient of fish fed with 0.50% meal size is significantly higher than those of other groups ( p 〈 0.05 ). The results demonstrate that the profile of the postprandial metabolic rate presents a typical ' triangle-shaped curve' in juvenile crucian carp. It is evolutionarily adaptive to its active foraging mode and lower trophie level in its habitat.
