The evolution of the word "Junzi" in The Book of Songs resulted in seven types of Junzi, including the Kings, the Dukes, the ministers, the incumbents, the people out of office with noble characters, the people away from home for military service or travelling, and the common people. A general survey of The Book of Songs shows that the coverage of "Junzi" had been widening, and people of diverse identities were referred to as Junzi. What's more, the word had less and less hierarchical implication, but more and more emphasis on men's morality and character. Meanwhile, it had evolved from a term referring to individuals to a collective term. By the turn of the two Zhou Dynasties, Junzi had been used in a general sense.
