Adding Mo into the Fe-Cr-C high chromium cast iron welding wire, the self-shielded flux cored wire was produced. The strengthening mechanisms of adding Mo into high-carbon and high chromium surfacing materials was studied based on thermodynamic equilibrium calculation. The results show that Mo can increase the number of primary carbides, and refine the microstructure of alloy; not only strengthen the carbide, but also the matrix. The effect of adding Mo into the high-Cr iron-based surfacing material on the microstructure and mechanical properties was studied by experimental methods. When adding 2% Mo, the welding quality of cladding layer is better than Mo-free material, while the average hardness increases by 12.5%, and the impact toughness increases to 1.9 times compared with no Mo.
