2,2＇ - diethynyl - 1,1＇ - binaphthyl was synthesized by using racemic 2,2＇ - dihydroxy - 1,1＇ - binaphthyl as a starting material via a 5 - step process of esterification of phenolic hydroxyl group, coupling reaction of sulfonic anhydride with Grignard reagent, bromination of methyl, hydrolysis of dibromomethyl and Wittig reaction. The four intermediates and the target product have been characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
