Since Schooling in Capitalist America was published in 1976, it has attracted considerable praise and sharp criticism in the past 40 years. Reflections and critiques of the book indicates different directions in the consequent radical theories of education. In 1970s, critiques were rather diverse in terms of theme and perspective; in 1980s, criticism was the major form of critiques and largely influenced the present perception of Schooling; in 1990s, it has been widely treated as a historic text and advocates for re evaluation occurred occasionally but with little influence; and in the 21St century, the significance of the book has been further recognized, becoming research objective of some dissertations.
