Aspects of supercavitation flow around a Hydronautics foil were observed by means of a high-speed video camera and analysed by picture-processing. The results showed that the development of supercavitation evolved in three stages: cavity formation, coexistence of two phases, and the fully developed phase with high vapor concentration. Firstly, mixtures of water and vapor are full of cavitation areas along with vortex shedding and tail fluctuating. Secondly, as the vapor phase coexists with water/vapor mixed phase, a transparent vapor area appears near the foreside of the cavity, although the mixture still filled the rear part. And finally, a cavity largely filled with vapor appeared with a two-phase tail, the whole flowing field attained a sub-stable state.
