Soil moisture is the important information for hydrology, weather, agriculture and other fields. We an- alyzed quantitatively the spatial pattern of soil moisture in the West Liaohe river basin, and further discussed the main factors influencing the soil moisture based on the datasets of land surface temperature and vegetation index from MODIS products, by extracting Temperature - Vegetation Drought Index. The results showed that : 1 ) The soil moisture was normal and light drought in general in the vegetation growing season. 2) The central region showed dry situations in the west Liaohe river basin, and upstream and midstream showed dry situations, the southwest region and rivers showed wet situations. 3 ) The spatial distribution of soil moisture in the area was ob- viously affected by the land cover, altitude and precipitation. There was differences in the different land covers, the highest in the woodland and the lowest in the sandy land. The soil moisture showed light wet- light drought -wet trend. The relationship between the soil moisture and the precipitation was "S" -like reverse.
