GIS course is one important specialized core course for surveying and mapping engineering specialty in universi ties. This paper discusses the characteristics of GIS course, teaching aims, teaching requirements, content settings of class room teaching and practice teaching, teaching reform measurements etc. under the background of modem informatization sur veying. The practice of GIS teaching indicates that the students＇ interests in GIS course have been improved greatly, and the effect of GIS course teaching is very good. Students＇ ability of theory understanding and practice have been promoted obvi ously.
