Acoustic emission, applied in the field of civil engineering and life assessment of safety monitoring, is a real-time, dynamic, nondestructive testing technology. This paper briefly introduces the definition and principle of acoustic emission technique. Based on classification and summary of the domestic and foreign literature, the key issues, research status, and progress of this technique are reviewed from four aspects： bridge engineering, geotechnical and underground engineering, hydraulic engineering, and other special engineering. Finally, the authors put forward their own opinions on the prospects of this technique and problems that need to be investigated in the future.
