Western academics use community indicators to re？ect the evolution and status of communities,and to forecast the trend of community development,which plays an important role in planning monitoring and evaluation.This paper systematically sorts out the shift from social indicators to community indicators.It also outlines the definitions,categories and functions of community indicators,and summarizes the construction and measurement method of indicators.Last but not least,the paper explores the applications of community indicators in monitoring and evaluation in the？eld of urban planning,and analyzes the four problems of function,selection,public participation and data management in indicators,which will have useful lessons in indicator research and application in Chinese urban planning.
