tat5 is an important member of signal transduction and activator of transcription(Stat) protein family. It has two highly homologous isoforms: Stat5a and Stat5b.Compared with other members,Stat5 is involved in a broader spectrum of cellular physiological regulation processes.Stat5 can not only contribute to cellular functions of proliferation, differentiation, survival and apoptosis, but also play important roles in mammary gland development, immune response, stem cell self-renewal regulation, hematopoiesis as well as tumors development and progression. This review summarizes the signal transduction mechanisms and the biological functions of Stat5.And we further discuss and predict the future progress in this field.
