With an historical analysis of the concerns of the constructors of traditional Chinese architecture, this paper tries to take stock of the literati's contribution to China's built environment. The concept of 'the complete man' was raised by thinkers of the built environment in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), a gradually realized concept that developed in tandem with Chinese culture and extensive experience in construction. The model of construction it advocates is predicated on the joint contribution of the literati and the craftsman, and geared towards the creation of a holistic environment that can meet the needs of human life as well as help achieve a state of perfection. Such a system of construction privileges the natural environment and deemphasizes architecture. It sits closer to the human condition and points to the higher state of human development. Architecture is therefore subsumed under a holistic environment as one of the means to shape the environment at large. Such is the perspective that this paper adopts in its understanding of traditional Chinese architecture and in its search for its deep structure, as the author's humble contribution to the cause of promoting traditional Chinese architecture.
