Through observing caryopses color changes of weedy rice at different maturity periods in Jiangsu Province, The caryopsis color of weedy rice was found to be as green as indica rice 9311 before fully maturing. After maturity, caryopsis color of 9311 showed yellow-white, while weedy rice in Jiangsu Province showed red. Furthermore, red pigment accumulated gradually with the caryopsis becoming more mature. By using hand and paraffin section, the anatomical structure of caryopsis among weedy rice 7 d after pollination,weedy rice and 9311 at maturity stage, were compared. The results showed that red pigment of caryopsis of weedy rice in Jiangsu province mainly deposited in pericarp, and a little in seed coat.
