The S-P predicate sentence is one of the special and common sentence patterns in Chinese. However, there are still three main controversies over its structure in terms of its subject and topic, its subject and prepositional object, and its subject and prompting constituents. There are mainly three reasons for these controversies, the different criteria for defining the sentence pattern, the different definitions of the subject and the predicate, and the different theoretical frames for such research.
