p53, a well known tumor suppressor gene,plays a major role in the control of cell cycle kinetics,cell death and carcinogenesis. As a tumor suppressor gene, its activation and regulation mechanism is a hot spot. Several stresses lead to p53 activation, which results in various biological outcomes, including cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. The exact decisive role of p53 is unclear. PUMA and MCL-1 are p53 target molecules which play an important role in the process of cell apoptosis. Here is to make a review of the activation of the p53 gene and its downstream PUMA,MCL-1 role.
