The relationships between general anesthetics and Alzheimer's disease (AD) have being widely concerned in medical care and society following the rapid increasing numbers of elderly patients and AD patients undergoing general anesthesia. Current researches show that postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is similar with AD, and some general anesthetics used in clinical practice are involved in the complicated mechanisms of AD, and the theory of general anesthesia, chronic POCD, and AD may share some unknown mechanisms in terms of the synaptic plasticity. Researches of the relationships between general anesthetics and AD become one of the central issues of anesthesia studying.
