An exposed historic stone is subjected to deterioration and weathering action influenced by various physical, chemical and biological damage factors. Some cultural relics are in severe danger for the weathering and degradation of the surface layer. Numerous conservation treatments have been applied to the protection and reinforcement of it. Most of them, however, either have negative impacts during curing or show very little efficacy. It is necessary that the remediation and reinforcement is achieved without the introduction of material causing irreversibly damage to historic stones. Thus the bioremediation is introduced. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the bioremediation of cultural stones and stresses practical significance for the conservation.
