Objective To evaluate its role in Chinese writing and investigate its neuropsychological mechanism by measuring the ratio of glucose metabolism on the basal ganglia. Methods 10 cases of healthy subjects, freshmen of undergraduate, aged from 18 to 24, were studied with positron emission tomography using ^18F-2-fluoro- 2-deoxy-D-glucose as tracer to observe and compare the glucose metabolism of basal ganglia during pseudo-writing and characters writing. Results During the process of characters writing in contrast to that of pseudo-writing in 10 subjects, a significant activation( P〈 0.05 )was showed in the left lentiform nucleus (0. 0435 ± 0. 0396), the right lentiform nucleus (0. 0634 ±0.0301), the left caudate nucleus (0.0463 ± 0.0384), the right caudate nucleus (0. 0566 ±0. 0396). There is no significant difference between the two sides in the activation of the lentiform nucleus and caudate nucleus ( P 〉 0. 05 ). Conclusion The bilateral basal ganglia participates in the process of characters writing.
