The effect of IL-1β on expression of TGF-β1 mRNA and protein in uterus and placenta of Spreqne-Dawley rats at different phases of pregnancy was examined by RT-PCR and Westem Blotting, respectively. The results showed that IL-1β obviously suppressed the expression of TGF-β1 during implantation period and late gestation period, while it promoted TGF-β1 expression in the uterus after implantation and in mid-gestatian period. There was no evident effect of IL-1β on TGF-β1 expression in the uterus during peri-implantation period. In placenta, IL-1β suppressed and promoted the expression of TGF-β1 in early period of gestation and in late period of gestation, respectively. The results indicate that IL-1β can regulate the expression of TGF-β1 in a stage- and tissue-specific manner during pregnancy.
