Methane content of coal is an important indicator of assessment of coal acceptability of consignments for safe shipment. Laboratory testing methods was used for coal methane content study. The test result was compared with foreign test results. Research shows that the methane content of ship carrying coal varies greatly, in general 0.2 -5 cm^3/g. The average methane content of the coal in China is 2.24 cm^3/g, and it is 1.08 cm^3/g at foreign. Ship carrying coal methane content is influenced by coal rank, volatile matter and coal particle size etc. With coal metamorphic grade increases the methane content of shipping coal increases first and then decreases.
