Nanocrystalline MgO powders were prepared by using Mg(NO3)2 and citric acid via gel-combustion synthesis. The effects of both the molar ratio of nitrate to citric acid and the pH value of precursors on the gel formation, morphology, combustion behavior and the crystalline size of the synthesized powders were investigated systematically, Finally, the processing parameters were optimized, and uniform nanocrystalline MgO powders with the average diameter of about 10nm were obtained.
