A number of animal experiments and epidemiologic studies in humans have demonstrated that current international standards for noise exposure may underestimate hearing trauma by complex noise. While energy is a necessary metric, it is not sufficient to evaluate hearing hazards from complex noise exposure. The characteristic of complex noise is also an important factor in evaluating complex noise-induced hearing loss(NIHL). In this paper, the studies on using kurtosis as a metric for complex NIHL evaluation in both animal and human models are introduced. The further research direction and application prospect of kurtosis are discussed.
