The present paper dealt with the distribution character- istics of heavy metals in sediment of Yalu River estuary and its adjacent shallow seas by enrichment coefficients and multi-metallic pollution degree. The results indicated that the enrichment grade of the heavy metals in the sediment of the studied area were higher than that in its adjacent land areas, and the elements of Cu, Hg and Cd were the key pollution factors. The high value distribution zone of multi-metallic pollution degree and the zone with high sand content were obviously corresponding, but the human activities were more influential to the distribution of heavy metals. The ecological risk was evaluated with two indicators of potential ecological risk index and bio-effeet concentration. The results proved that ecological risk level in Yalu River estuary and its adja- cent shallow seas was generally low in reference to the high- est value of heavy metals in the global sediments before in- dustrialization as the background value, which was the same as the evaluation result of bio-effeet concentration, and was comparative in a large area. But the relative pollution degree in the studied area was still on the high side.
