The title compound,N,N'-dicarboxymethyl-2-metbylbenzimidazole,was synthesized from the starting material of 2-methylbenzimidazole. Its structure was detemined by IR, ^1H NMR,elemental analysis and X-ray diffraction. X-ray analysis revealed that one-dimensional polymeric structures in the solid State were formed by intermoleeular hydrogen bonds between the title compounds , and these polymers were further extended into two-dimensional structure by π-π stacking interaction between benzimidazole rings. The crystal was monoclinic system with space group P21/c, Mr :568.54, a = 19. 821 ( 3 ), b = 7. 4501 ( 11 ), c = 20. 093 ( 3 ) A,β = 116.479(3)° ,V =2655.8(3) ]k3 ,z =4,Do = 1. 422mg·m^3 ,F(000) = 1200,R =0.0675 ,wR =0.2187.
