Paragons of Ancient-style Prose( 《古文标准》) was a late Southern-Song annotated anthology attributed to Xiao Zhai( 敩斋). Though lost long ago, this book was partly preserved in the First Volume of A Collection of Ancient-style Prose Annotated by Confucianists( 《诸儒批点古文集成前集》) compiled by Wang Tingzhen( 王霆震),which was a collection more faithful to the original texts than other annotated anthologies of the same type, enabling us to collect and re-edit some pieces of the lost book and providing us with valid materials to deduce its format, quality and features of annotation. From the existing re-edited texts collected in this anthology,we can see it bears such features as a combination of annotation and commentary,a wide range of selection,a psychological pursuit for novelty, and an emphasis on the exemplary significance of the prose by Han Yu( 韩愈) and Liu Zongyuan( 柳宗元). The re-edited texts in this anthology can help enhance our understanding of the ancient-style prose annotation in the Southern-Song Dynasty, and give us inspirations in the study of prose stylistics as well.
