Diabetic retinopathy is one of the most common and serious diabetic complications, which also is a leading cause of visual loss in industrialized countries. The study on mechanism of diabetic retinopathy has provided some indications for drug therapy. In this article, current approaches and perspectives in medical treatment of diabetic retinopathy were reviewed as the following aspects ： inhibitor of advanced glycation end products, protein kinase C signaling pathway, cytokine, anti-oxidant and blocking renin-angiotensin system, and endothelin receptor antagonists. The new trends in the therapy and the investigated new drugs were also introduced.
