Due to emergent oceurrence and high mortality, patients with liver failure often require liver transplantation. Besides, cell therapy, an alternative to bridge to or even substitute for liver transplantation, has been the research focus. The authors briefly summarize the basic research progress and clinical application of cell therapy of liver failure, including hepatocyte transplantation, hematopoietie and mesenchymal stem cell transplantation, and the features and clinical prospects of hepatic progenitor cells and induced pluripotent stem cells.
