VANET is an ad hoc network vulnerable to Byzantine faults. Some trusted hardware could prevent the spoofing attack, and however the trusted hardware would generally require system-level support, and the cost to make the system compatible to trusted hardware usually hinders its practicability. Considering the unique characteristics of VANET, a novel type of minimal, externally-attached trusted hardware is suggested which could protect the security of communication protocols without any change of original system hardware- Trusted Counter Add-on. Based on this minimal trusted hardware, an improved security protocol for relaying of emergency warning message in VANET is proposed.
