Imiquimod, a new topical small-molecule immune response modifier, has been found to be effective in treating some skin tumors. The underlying mechanism of its anti-skin tumor effects include the activation of innate and acquired immunity through binding with Toll-like receptors and stimulating the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines ( such as IFN-α, TNF-α and IL-12 ), and induction of tumor cells apoptosis by upregulating Fas expression and/or downregulating bcl-2 expression.
