Frequency-following response (FFR) is a sustained brainstem potential which might be attributed to multiple generators in auditory brainstem, therefore FFR is regarded as reflection of neural phase-locking activity in auditory brainstem to the periodic stimulus components. Typical FFRs evoked by pure tones or complex tones display spectral peaks at fundamental frequency and harmonics as well, but the peak at ftmdamental frequency is predominant. FFRs evoked by two-tone stimuli also contain distortion product. FFR might bear pitch-relevant information, thus enabling itself to be used as a tool for brainstem-level exploration in auditory speech and pitch coding or plasticity. This paper briefly reviewed several aspects of FFR, such as its neural generators, its response characteristics and its reflection of speech or pitch perception.
