The paper put forward a set of descriptive rules for map symbol library on describing and organizing the point、line and area symbols with the way of plain text based on the visual variables and BNF,which could share map symbol resource crossing platforms and greatly enhance the work efficiency.Then it realized the symbols drawing and using of an 1：50000 topographic map with the rules,which would give some referencial value for craft brothers.
